Tomorrow is Another Day

Ian stretched out on the sofa of his apartment. He didn't stay here often, since he had a private bunk at The Nest, but every now and again it did him some good. He wasn't exactly a people person, unless the job required him to be that. He'd made a phone call earlier to talk to his kid. It was a short call, since his child's mother interrupted the call. Truth be told, Ian was never really happy in the marriage. She spent too much money, nagged all the time that he was never home (which she was actually right about), and on the rare occasion that he was home, she wouldn't let him touch her. He was the first to say that he made mistakes, but her cheating on him was the last straw. Thing was, she filed for divorce before he could. It didn't matter though, the end result was the same. They weren't together anymore, and he got to see his kid from time to time, though not often enough. His job still kept the majority of his time. She never seemed to understand just how important his job was. He was part of Eagle's Nest, the organization that was out to protect the world from any threats. Part of her concern though, he knew, was the fact that he was merely a human who regularly threw himself into the line of danger against insanely powerful beings. But, it was his job.
Today wasn't a day off, but he was just spending a few hours alone before heading out. He was going to make his way to The Nest later in the afternoon. He had a meeting with Hale about his next mission. It was sure to be something about the Augury Soldiers, or the clean up from the battles. It didn't really matter to him. Whatever the job was, he'd carry it out to the letter. He sat up, stretching out again and checking the magazine of his glock. He holstered it, shouldered his rifle, and slid on the light armor vest over his shirt. He stood, took a quick sip from his water, and left the room. Out the front door, and Ian was on his way. He stopped to get a drink at a corner store, a Dr. Pepper, and put it in his back pocket after taking a few sips.
Now on his way to the launch point, where he'd get picked up and taken to The Nest, he stopped to admire the scenery. Honestly, it was something that he didn't often do. Looking over the area though, he made a mental note to stop more often. He almost always noticed the small stuff, but the bigger picture was a bit more elusive for him. He continued to walk, but stopped again when he noted a man playing with his child. They were throwing a baseball back and forth. He wished that he could do that with his son more often. Part of him wanted to retire, but he knew that he couldn't. Especially right now. A man with his skills would be necessary when, not if, but when that mad alien came back. And he'd be needed for most everything in between. Everything else would just have to wait.
