"This is true," Nathan said with a nod, agreeing with her statement about the younger people. "Robbie is a good kid. Sometimes gets out of his own depth though. He's having girlfriend problems lately. He's tough, though. He'll get through them." That was something that Nathan took pride in, knowing each of his agents and employees on a one on one basis. He always felt that it was the right way to lead, to put himself in a situation where he could actually just talk to them and not be bossing them around all the time. "Pay grade is a funny thing," he answered with a small smile. "The team is working on a force field generator, larger than any in existence. Strictly to be used for purposes of base defense. The technology isn't quite developed enough for personal fields. Luckily, there are extranormals out there who have the ability to do that." Oh, he caught the tone from her question, and he even let on that he did with a smirk as he answered.
"Isn't it? This tech was originally designed by Marc Solomon. Man's a genius. Shame about his kid." Her interest in magical items piqued his interest as well. "They are rare, and magic users are even more rare. We know of three who use magic. And as they are more qualified to protect the magical items, we usually entrust them to one of them. Sean Hollingsworth, calls himself Mr. Mystic. He's really more of a showman than anything, but his power isn't to be trifled with. Then there's the Sovereign. Scary powerful, even scares me, to be totally honest. But evil, so we keep as much away from his as possible. And then there's Amulet, Sarah Blackfoot. Easily the most powerful being in existence. We leave most things with her." He turned a corner and opened another door. Inside there was a vault. "We do, though, keep some items here. There is a failsafe to opening this though, so unfortunately I can't show you the contents right now. It takes three high ranking members of Eagle's Nest to use their keycodes simultaneously to enter."
Continuing on, they passed the mess hall. "Meals are taken here, and...." he was interrupted as Savant came up to him. "Here's that report you wanted, sir." He took it and looked it over quickly. "Seven? Really?" he asked. She smiled and nodded. "It's going really well. We should be done by the end of the evening, if everything continues to go right. Oh, hello," she said to Lydia. "I heard you were pretty, seems the guys weren't exaggerating for once."
"Good work," he said. The girl smiled and went back. "They are working on another project, this one is for the engines of our jets. Always looking to make improvements."

It shocked Charm that he knew so much about his people. The majority of the people she’d spent time with in her life didn’t care enough to make the effort. For the leader of an organization like this, he seemed to really care. No wonder the people who worked for him were so loyal. If the people she worked for could have flipped one of his agents, there would have been no need for her to infiltrate. “There have to be hundreds of people in your employ. Do you keep track of all their love lives?” It would be impressive enough if he genuinely knew all their names. Getting to know him and earn his trust would certainly be easier if he kept tabs on everyone. Especially if he took the time one on one. A few more opportunities like this and she would be well on her way to reaching her goal. Assuming, of course, that she was able to read him the way she’d done with so many before him. It was much more difficult so far, but that made it more fun in a way. She’d never had a real challenge before.
“Solomon Inc, right? I knew they were heavy into tech, but I didn’t think they were in this deep.” It made sense, though. Huge multi-billion dollar corporations like that one were always into military or government work of some kind. She wondered if her employers had any contacts within Solomon that could provide insight about the different top secret projects they were working on for the Nest. Might prove to be some valuable intel.
Director Hale had her full attention when he spoke about the magic artifacts and magic users. It was a topic of genuine interest for her. Magic had always fascinated her anyway, but now her employers had given her a specific reason to learn all she could. If the item she was looking for was in the possession of Amulet, that would be near-impossible to get her hands on. Hopefully it was something that was still kept on base. Getting three high-ranking members’ keys was going to be enough of a challenge, but at least now she knew how to open the vault. “Some other time then, hopefully,” she said with a casual shrug. As much as she would love to see what they had locked away, it didn’t have to be now. If she tried to rush, seemed too impatient, Nathan Hale might be tipped off. He was a smart man, and very dangerous. She had to tread carefully if she wanted to earn his trust.
They moved on to the mess hall, and then he was approached by a woman with a report to make. Charm took the opportunity to study both Hale and the woman as they discussed the project, but as soon as the subject of conversation turned to her she didn’t miss a beat. “Been here for an hour and I’m already water cooler gossip? I guess I’m flattered…” she said with a friendly laugh. Once the other woman was gone, she returned her attention to Hale. “Jet engines, hmm? I know yours are already the best, but I guess you can’t stay on top of the game if you stay still. So what kind of improvements are you trying to make there?”

This was going well. Nathan was fully impressed with the woman. Still, there was something that just wasn't quite there. Unfortunately, he just couldn't put his finger on it. She wasn't easy to read, which was good. It would make her a great agent, maybe even a double agent. Of course the thought went through his head. Wouldn't be doing his due diligence if it hadn't. But he had no reason to believe that she had any other goal than to just be part of the team. He chuckled when she asked about his knowledge of love lives. "It pays to know these things. Hundreds?" He turned and looked directly at her. "This is just the tip of the iceberg, Ms. Hansen. I supervise over two thousand people, including field agents, scientists, pilots, mechanics, superheroes and even the trainees. And I know all of them. Information is a powerful tool, and keeping your people in mind....well that makes all the difference." He looked over, pointing as they passed by one of his trainees, DJ, beating on a heavy bag. "For instance, DJ over there has a rather large crush on Rayne. Kid doesn't have the confidence to tell her."
He nodded when she mentioned Solomon, Inc. "Oh they're into everything from vehicles to security systems to cellular phones and anything you could think of. He's not one that we see often though. Based in Mooncrest City, though he's in town right now."
The magic artifacts. That would get anybody's attention. So it wasn't a surprise when she perked up some at the mention. Even the knowledge of the world's magic users seemed to grab her attention. Perhaps she was interested in learning some of the arcane arts. Having someone with that skill at Eagle's Nest would be one hell of an asset. Most people did love the idea of being able to do such things as fly or turn invisible or control elements like magicians did. "Maybe. Though it would have to be one fucked up situation for three high enough ranking members of this organization to ever be in one location at one time. You can't be too careful."
Turning his attention to the young woman who'd approached, Nathan released a short chuckle at Lydia's comment about water cooler gossip, with a small shake of his head. "It never takes long," he said with a quick shrug. They continued on after Savant headed off, and she questioned about the jet engines. "Better fuel efficiency is the big goal. They are already fast and work extremely well. Resistant to damage, but it just eats up fuel. It's to be expected, of course, but like you said, can't stay on top if you stay still." She was getting information out of him that most wouldn't be able to, but that wasn't lost on him. The tour was nearing an end now. She had seen everything that a recruit would be allowed to see, and then some. "So before I turn you loose in the place, are there any other questions you'd like to ask me?"

Charm couldn’t agree more. Information was one of the most powerful tools there was. It shouldn’t surprise her that this man was able to keep track of the lives of each employee. After all, he’d managed to become the head of this organization at such a young age. Obviously there was a lot of intelligence behind those sultry eyes. One hell of a memory, at any rate. That meant more pressure on her end not to slip up. If she gave even the smallest piece of information that was incorrect, it might come back to bite her in the ass later. In that case, it was normally best to keep things simple, not give too many details. Charm was a pro, though. There wasn’t a detail of 'Lydia Hansen'’s life she hadn’t thought about and completely memorized. She was the best, and that was why she’d been sent here. A lesser agent would undoubtedly get caught under the watchful eye of this man. “Well, I’m afraid you might be bored to tears by my lack of a social life in comparison. Try not to judge me too harshly. I’m married to the job.” Oh, if he only knew how true that was. He was probably one of the few people in the world who could maybe understand the way she’d been brought up. Maybe, but she’d never get a chance to find out. 'Lydia' had lived a relatively normal life, and that was all he would ever know her as.
Complication one to getting into that magical tool room. The three with keys were never in the same place at the same time? Even for a secure room, that seemed excessive. What would happen if they ever needed to use one of those things? Well, she decided it would be best to drop the subject for now. “That’s very true,” she said in reply to his comment about how you can’t be too careful. “I’m sure that Sovereign guy would love to get his hands on the artifacts in that room. Better to play it safe.” It was an unexpected wrinkle that would delay her being able to get her hands on what she’d come for, but she was an intelligent and creative woman. She’d figure out a way, somehow.
It seemed their tour was nearing an end. It was a shame. ‘Lydia’ was enjoying the Director’s company. It was fascinating to watch the way his mind worked. Even though it wasn’t necessarily part of her job this time around, she found herself wanting to unravel his mystery. It might help her achieve her goal, but it was more than that. He was a challenge. And she could tell he was curious about her as well. It was almost a game, but who would win in that kind of battle of wits? Despite the fact that it was probably far more dangerous to try getting close to this man, she was still tempted. Charm shrugged her shoulders when he asked if she had any questions for him. “I guess I’m just curious about the next step. I mean, beyond me heading back to the mess hall to grab some food. It actually smelled pretty good in there.” She laughed. Maybe she’d get lucky and he’d want to join her, but she figured he had to be pretty busy so the chances were slim. "How will I be contacted if I'm needed for something, I guess is my real question."

For the entirety of Nathan's life, he had always been in control. At least, that's the persona that he put forward. It wouldn't do for the people who follow him to not see him fully on point and doing what he had to do. But there were memories in his head that in private moments he would allow himself to feel things. He would allow himself to hurt for his losses, for that which he couldn't have. There was no normal life for him anymore. Sure, he could quit, but the organization would fall flat on it's face if he did. And if that happened, the world would be doomed. Eagle's Nest protected everybody, even the rival organizations, if indirectly. This was the most powerful and influential organization in the entire world, no doubts about it, but what really made it so was its leadership's value of its people. Resources were great, money was as well, but if you didn't have the right people to use those then it was all for naught. And Nathan knew that. He lived it, preached it. There was no two ways about it. He smiled at her comment about a lack of a social life. "I can relate," he answered with a small shrug. There was no relief for him. He was Director Hale, and that was all.
The magical room was quite a sight on the inside. The only time the three figureheads of the organization had ever been in the same room was when they'd locked that item away. Luckily, they'd had an honest mage, the one known as Amulet, to erect a magical barrier around it as well. That, he didn't tell Lydia. Couldn't give away all the secrets now could he? "Yes, I'm sure he would. I find it a little odd, to be honest, that he hasn't tried anything. We stand ready at all times just the same." Yes, it was definitely better to play it safe.
Nathan didn't want to bore her with more random information. He'd already filled her head with enough to make a scientist go crazy. He found it quite respectable that she'd taken so much in. He was impressed, and honestly a bit concerned. Only Savant had remembered everything so clearly before, and she had powers that gave her that memory. Still, he wasn't going to overthink anything. "The next step," he repeated. "Well definitely hit the mess hall. Get Amelia to make you some of her chili dogs. They're the best thing you'll ever taste. After that you can mull about all you want. Talk to people, get to know your coworkers. And definitely get some rest. You've had a trying day today." He knew he'd put her through a lot, but it was necessary to find out what she was made of. She was tough and hardy, and ready for more. He liked that. "Look for Savant, the young woman who came up to us earlier, in the comms room upstairs. She'll give you a communicator. It's imbedded with a nav point so we can ping your location, mostly for security reasons, and so that we can contact you when you're needed. We also have meetings each morning at oh eight hundred. You'll be expected to attend most of them." He extended his hand to shake hers once more before he headed off. "It has been a pleasure to meet you. Welcome to Eagle's Nest, Agent Hansen."

The Sovereign. Charm hadn’t heard of him before, but she figured her employers already had. There wasn’t much that escaped them. Except, apparently, how the hell she was supposed to get into the magical artifact room. This was not going to be easy. Then again, they would have sent their best agent if they hadn’t known the level of difficulty. The blonde had been dropped into a den of snakes, and somehow had to escape with the necessary item. One wrong move and she’d be imprisoned or killed. But maybe she’d get lucky and this Sovereign character could provide a distraction. It was worth bringing up to her handler, anyway, in case the organization had any other ideas. Amusement filled her face. “Chili dogs, huh? Noted…” You could tell a lot about a person based on the kind of food they loved to eat. For some reason, she’d pictured him as someone who preferred the kind of restaurant that had more than just the basic three silverware utensils. That was probably just her projecting her own expectations on him, though, based on the only other boss she’d ever had. Boy did THAT guy have expensive taste… She couldn’t let herself continue making those kinds of assumptions, just because the two held similar titles. They might behave in similar ways in terms of their level of professionalism, but the chili dog revelation told Charm that Hale had a different side underneath. A more casual, maybe even fun side. One that she seriously doubted had seen the light of day in recent years. She filed that away for possible future use. Even knowing very little about Nathan Hale, he did not tend toward exaggeration. If he said the chili dogs were great, then she had no doubt it was true. “I’ll definitely check those out.” His advice was good. She definitely planned on speaking to as many people, and making as many friends, as possible during her time with this organization. After all, there was no telling who might be able to provide useful information that would help with her mission. The director though, she had a feeling he would be the key to her success or failure. That was why she made sure to pay close attention to his words. She would be a nearly-perfect agent. No one was perfect after all, and even if she could be it would most likely make a man like Nathan Hale more suspicious of her than he already probably was. It would take time and a lot of work to earn his trust. “The pleasure is all mine, Director Hale.” Charm responded with a smile as she took his hand and shook it. “I guess I’ll see you tomorrow morning at oh eight hundred.” Taking her hand away from his, she turned back in the direction of they way they’d come. Cafeteria, and then comms room upstairs to look for Savant. Then she could pretty much do whatever she wanted, as long as she wasn’t sticking her nose into trouble. Sounded like a pretty good evening, all things considered. --end thread--
