Aurora was glad for the distraction from her own problems and happily listened to Nick talk about his sister. There was obviously a lot of love there. As there should be. But then he faltered, and she stopped sipping her milkshake to pay closer attention. Even without reading his mind, she could feel his distress coming off him in waves. The empathy was even more difficult to control than the telepathy, but at least it was less invasive. Being able to know how people are feeling could be learned through studies in body language and so forth. Reading minds was a ‘gift’ only given to a very select few.
“Vanished?” Aurora was taken aback. How could something like that have happened? Shit that made her feel so guilty for having asked, but at the same time she was really glad he’d told her. Director Hale had wanted them to get to know each other, after all. The closer the bond between them, the better her powers would work. “Shit, I’m so sorry.” She could only imagine what that would be like. The food was a welcome distraction, and Aurora laughed as she noticed them both going for the fries first. Great minds think alike.
The conversation was eventually turned back around to her family. The psychic hesitated. She didn’t like talking about them. He’d opened up to her about his sister, though. It was only fair that she share a certain amount of her own pain. “No. They don’t talk to me anymore. Their Aurora died in the Omega attack, and a monster with her face was who came back home.” She looked down into her milkshake, using her right hand to slowly pull the straw in a circle around the inner edges of the glass. “I couldn’t control my powers at all when I first got them. It was actually painful whenever I was in a large group. Kept crying and telling them I could hear voices in my head. They thought I was crazy until I started spouting family secrets in the open. Freaked them out pretty bad I guess. Anyway, they kicked me out and I came back here. Then Hale found me, and the rest is history I guess.”

The food was good, the company better. Nick though, was still feeling every word escaping his mouth about his sister and how he felt about her vanishing. He nodded when Aurora repeated vanished in a question. "Yeah, I don't understand it. She was here one second, gone the next." It was something he was sure he'd never understand, unless he found his sister one day and she explained what happened. But that was a big if. There were times that he wasn't even sure he was ready to face her again. He'd failed to protect her, after all. Wasn't that was a big brother was supposed to do? "Thank you, but I'll find her eventually. She'd really like you."
Aurora was a nice person. Of that he was sure, and he was absolutely sure that her and his sister would have gotten along famously. But that was something to think about at another time. Right now, as the two sat eating and getting to know each other, Nick could only stare at the beautiful face across from him. He even reached over once, a small smile on his face as he wiped a small portion of salt from just below her lower lip. "These fries are salty as hell, but damn their good," he said as he wiped off his hand with his napkin.
He noted the hesitance in Aurora's voice when the conversation slipped to her story. He almost stopped her, but he'd let out his baggage, and they were supposed to get to know each other. What better way to learn about your travel companion than to know their history? But this....this was just too much to bear. She had to be some kind of strong to deal with that. "You're no monster," he said softly. "I've seen monsters. You, in just the small amount of time I've known you, are the most gentle soul I've ever met. Your powers are rare, so learning to control that is more difficult than almost any power. At least any I can think of." Being able to read thoughts was something that many people said they wished they could do, but they didn't see the downside of that. He could imagine that she often got splitting headaches. "Hale's a good man," he said respectfully. The director didn't have any powers, but he seemed to know just what to do no matter what the situation. He was always cool. "I'm glad he found you. How though? How did he find you? I went through the training program, found him really. My powers aren't as advanced as yours."

Aurora’s heart broke for Nick. And his sister. How terrifying must it be to have someone you love suddenly disappear like that? She wondered briefly if the girl had been taken by some kind of bad guy. It wouldn’t surprise her if it had gotten out that Nick was an agent for the Nest. There were other possibilities though. She could have developed powers of her own, some kind of teleportation perhaps, and didn’t know how to control them or get back home. She could even potentially be stuck in another dimension or something. He’d undoubtedly thought of all these possibilities already. “Well, if you ever need the help of a good telepath, you know where to find me.” She didn’t know how much a power like hers would help, considering the fact that he seemed to have no leads whatsoever, but she had to at least offer.
The food came quickly, and as usual Aurora went in hard on the fries. They just weren’t the same once they were cold. Reheating them was one of the cardinal sins, she was certain. Apparently she was making a bit more of a mess than she’d intended to, though. She’d blinked at him in confusion when she noticed him reaching across the table for her, but it was only to wipe a bit of salt from her chin. Well that was embarrassing. And exhilarating at the same time. Her attraction to this man what growing stronger by the minute. She really needed to be careful.
Talking about her past was something Aurora did not do often. It was hard for her, brought up all sorts of bad memories she’d spent the last couple of years trying to suppress. It was hard, being suddenly thrown out into the world alone, without a friend in the world. Without a family. If it hadn’t been for Hale, there was no way she would have landed on her feet. She probably would have been driven mad and killed herself long ago. “I guess maybe we found each other. I was looking for answers, but it was so difficult for me to control my power that every time I was in public something bad happened. The Director saw some surveillance footage of me, I think, and tracked me down. There was a particularly bad episode where I accidentally knocked all the people at a gas station unconscious because they were thinking so loud at me and I just wanted to shut them up. I’m pretty sure it made the news too.” Not one of her finer moments, that was for sure. She looked back up at him. Did he really not see her as a monster? Most of the people here were polite to her, always cordial, but she could sense just the tiniest bit of fear within them. They had secrets they wanted to keep, or were afraid of her losing control again. Either way, they kept her mostly at arms’ length. She couldn’t sense any of that from Nick. “I don't know how gentle my soul is after everything. But you… really aren’t scared of me?”
