"I know, but...."
"No! No buts about it, Maverick," Hale answered quickly, firmly. The director of Eagle's Nest shook his head softly, knowing what his agent was going through. "Look, I know you're dealing with a lot here. I know you realize how much I'm dealing with too. This city is on the edge of a knife right now with those damn soldiers out there. Everyone I have has a task at hand, and they're all out on those jobs." He stopped for a moment and rested his hand on Maverick's shoulder. "Once this is settled, I promise you, we will find your sister. I'll call in everyone, even get the Spartans involved if it's needed. We will find her," he said, emphasizing the word we at the end. Maverick nodded. He'd always known that the director was good on his word, that he cared about the people who worked for him and their needs and wants. There was nothing that Maverick needed or wanted more than to find his sister. The problem was that he didn't even know where to start.
"Right now, I need you on this. Are you with me?"
"You know I am," Maverick answered.
"You'll be working with Link. I'm not sure you've met more than just in passing, but she'll be here soon. I'll debrief you both when she arrives, but you're going to be traveling out of the country. Cold weather wear, I'd strongly recommend." Hale turned to look over a holopad that an agent brought to him. "Is this accurate?" he asked, and the agent nodded. "Get it to Logic, he'll decode the rest." The agent took off, and Hale directed Maverick towards a table in the corner of the room. There was another holopad sitting at the table. "Look that over, tell me what you think. She should be here any minute now, and we'll talk about all of this."
The director walked off, leaving his agent there to look over the holopad. This was interesting. Interesting indeed. Maverick wasn't used to working with a partner, so his mind drifted a bit. He hoped that she was at least easy on the eyes. He couldn't remember ever meeting Link before. Time would tell.

It had been a while since Aurora had been called to meet with the Director. Not that she wasn’t kept busy, being one of the few telepaths working for the Nest. Hale normally seemed to handle the combat-type missions, so those teams tended to get more face-time. Not that she was complaining. Her jobs tended to be a little more low-key, especially since she hadn’t been with the organization that long. She gave her all to her work, and it seemed like it was being noticed. A meeting with the Director usually meant a big job needed to be done. She could only wonder what that was, how her particular powers would fit into his plan for how things would need to be done, and of course, who she would be working with. She’d done missions with a pretty wide variety of colorful characters so far. It was never boring, that’s for sure.
Walking into the room, her attention was immediately drawn to a man standing in the corner with his back to her. Impressive broad shoulders, tapering down to an ass that didn’t quit, but definitely not the Director. This was definitely where she was told to go, though. She looked around the room until she spotted the man she was looking for, and cleared her throat softly. “You asked for me, Director Hale?” Her eyes flickered back briefly to the other man in the corner, wondering if he was the one she would be working with on this assignment. She was pretty certain she’d never seen him before. A backside like that was definitely not something she would have forgotten so easily.
The easiest and quickest way to sate her curiosity about what was going on would be to just read their minds. Part of her was always tempted to do something like that when she was around new people. See if she could really trust them. It wouldn’t be fair, though. Unless they knew she was a telepath and gave their permission, it would be a breach of their privacy. Not really the best way to get to know people, and she’d lost both friends and potential lovers because of her powers. Even here in this kind of place, there were people she could tell that felt a little uncomfortable around her. Didn’t have to be psychic to pick up on those kind of vibes. Maybe that was why she spent so much of her time alone outside of missions.

So focused on the holopad was he, that Nick didn't even hear his potential partner enter the room. Nor did he hear Hale when the director turned to greet her. "Aurora, it's good to see you. How are you today?" he asked. Hale was genuine in his care for his agents, and his field agents came first. "Nick," he called out. Maverick turned around slowly, barely pulling his eyes away from the holopad. "Yeah?" he asked as he walked over to the director. "Son of a bitch, the Monarchs started training camp without their quarterback?"
"What the hell?" Hale asked as he took the holopad from the agent. "Sports stories?" Maverick shrugged and turned his head slightly. That's when he finally laid eyes on his partner. Damn. Wait....she was telepathic. This was not going to be easy, now that he thought about it. Hopefully she was ethical enough to not just read his mind. Boy would she be in for a full on sex scene if she did right now. He managed to nod and give a warm smile to her. "It's nice to meet you," he said with a respectful tone. "Hale here says you're the best. I'm looking forward to working with you."
"Oh, but the designs you had me look over did look interesting," he said quickly, turning to Hale again and pointing to the holopad. "I'm glad you think so, because they are eventually going to replace your uniforms." He handed the holopad over to Aurora. "So, briefing," Hale said slowly. "Up north there is a small facility formerly used by Blizzard. A terrorist organization that has links to many of the more devastating events since the Omega's invasion. They've had their grimy little fingers in damn near everything. We were sure that the facility has been swept clean, put our surveillance caught a blip a few days ago. Something is still there, and we need to know what. As I told Maverick earlier, cold weather gear is a hefty suggestion, as well as any other supplies you personally want to take."
"Lots of beef jerky," Nick responded quickly. He looked over to Aurora. "You like beef jerky?"

“Doing well, thank you,” she responded with a smile. It was nice of him to always ask how his people were doing, and he genuinely seemed to care. That quality was rare in upper management in general. Hale was different on many levels. He cared about them all, but at the same time kept everyone basically at arms’ length when it came to his own life. She knew a fair percentage of the female population of this place would love to get to know him on a more...intimate level. She certainly wouldn’t kick a man that gorgeous out of her bed. Not even so much as a rumor of an innocent work flirtation, though. If she didn’t know the man personally, she’d think there had to be something seriously wrong with him. Nope, not as far as she could tell anyway. Still, it was a damn shame...
Any slight irritation she might have felt by her potential partner’s lack of professionalism was instantly eclipsed when he actually turned around. Well damn if the front didn’t match or even exceed the rear. That was a feat in itself. Still, looking at sports news with the director of the agency in the same room? Not super smart. It seemed like this was something Hale was used to from this guy, though, considering the lack of real reprimand. They must know each other pretty well. And this guy Nick must be pretty damned good if he was putting up with it. Aurora was intrigued. And amused, especially when she noticed him checking her out very briefly before speaking. “Nice to meet you too.”
After listening to the mission, Aurora tilted her head to the side. This was different from the sort of tasks she was normally assigned. “You’re sending a telepath because… you think someone is still up there who might have information we need?” She normally didn’t like cold weather, but she was willing to put up with it for the short duration of this mission. Besides, if worst came to worst, there were always fun ways to keep warm… Ahem. Business. She had to stay focused on the mission. Nick’s next question made her chuckle. “Only terrorists don’t like beef jerky,” was her response. Terrorists and vegetarians. Same thing, really. Okay, that was probably a major exaggeration, but honestly… she couldn’t understand those people. Especially vegans. Meat was delicious. Their sad attempts at making meatless substitutes like bacon always made her shake her damn head. Of course there could be vegan dishes that were decent or even tasty. It was the imitation that irritated her. Eat plants if you want, despite the fact that humans had evolved as a species to be omnivorous. But the people who forced dogs and cats into vegan diets… definitely terrorists.

"That's exactly why I'm sending a telepath," Hale responded. "The blip we got could be a person that has intel we need to get ahold of." Of course, the blip could have been anything from a roaming beast to a person. Even now the technology wasn't so advanced that it could recognize exactly what had caused the alert. The organization didn't have cameras there. But that was about to change. Hale picked up a small device. "Place this in a corner with a clear view, and we'll have full visual of the area. This way we'll know in the future for certain." Nick nodded and slid his hands into his pockets. A camera, huh? He off-handedly wondered if it was a recording device, and then thoughts creeped into his head that he immediately had to shut off.
Okay, well Aurora wasn't a terrorist. That was a relief. Nick smiled and let a brief chuckle out before he looked back over to the director. "So when are you planning on us to head out? I know I've got to gather my gear. I'm not a big fan of cold weather, and I figure I'm gonna need a lot of bullets just in case." Hale gave a slightly off look to him. The agent known as Maverick had been known in the past to go off the books and spray an area with lead, especially when his thoughts dwelled on finding his sister, wherever she was. "You'll leave in the morning. I'd like you two to coordinate. Spend time together today to build up some co-existence. I know you're not the biggest team player, it's part of why we call you Maverick, Nick," he said, drawing a shrug from the agent. "And Aurora, you're still fairly untested in the field. This is a chance for you to show just how good I already know you are. Build up confidence."
"Okay, so spend some time together. I can get behind that," Nick said. He turned to Aurora. "You want to gather gear first and then meet up somewhere?" Nick was not liking the idea of going into the lower temperature climates, but just looking at the woman heated him up. She was gorgeous. Insanely so. He looked back at Hale, who was waiting for a response from them. "I'm on board, of course," Nick said. "I'll make sure I pack plenty of jerky," he smiled as he said to Aurora.

Maverick… Aurora smirked to herself. Until Hale made that comment, she’d had no idea who Nick was or what his powers might be. Now she knew exactly who he was. His reputation preceded him. She wanted to make some kind of comment to him, a request for him to just not shoot her. That probably wouldn’t be appropriate though, especially not in front of the Director. She didn’t know either of them well enough to be quite that casual. Not yet, anyway. Getting to know Nick on a much more intimate basis was now on her to-do list, even despite the rumors she’d heard about his lone wolf nature. She leaned forward a little to get a better look at the camera they were going to be placing up there. It shouldn’t be difficult to find a good place to put something that small. It did make her wonder how many of these tiny cameras populated the walls of this base. Probably hundreds.
So they were supposed to get together and do some get-to-know-you-type team building exercises tonight before they left in the morning. She couldn’t help but think there was one real quick way for them to get to know each other, but that thought was quickly pushed aside. No more dirty mind for right now. This was business. She nodded after hearing Nick’s suggestion, with a bit of a chuckle at his comment about beef jerky. “Good idea. Cold weather isn’t my cup of tea either, so I’ve got quite a bit of packing to do.” They probably wouldn’t be gone for that long, but she’d need lots of layers if she was going to get through this. She had to be strategic about what she packed though. Too many layers would mean extremely limited mobility. That would be dangerous if there was a potential enemy up there.
“Shouldn’t take me more than a couple hours. Where should we meet after?” There were a few spots in the Nest that Aurora liked to frequent, but there was also a large chunk of the base she’d never even been to. Obviously her temporary partner had different preferred hangout spots since she was pretty certain they’d never seen each other before. There was no way in hell she would have missed a glance at that ass, and even less of a chance she wouldn’t remember it. Even if she’d been drinking at the time. Things like that were too important to black out on.

This was going to be beyond interesting. Nick wasn't ever really one to work with a partner. It just never seemed to work out right for him. It wasn't that he didn't like people, he did actually, for the most part. It was just that he worked better alone. It was a lonely lifestyle, but he wasn't really hurting when it came to matters of the heart. He kept himself busy, whether on jobs or just on searching for his missing sister, he found he just didn't have time to date. His missing sister, his thoughts lingered there for a few moments before returning to the subject at hand. Noticing Aurora lean to get a closer look at the camera, and he made a similar move, but not quite as inquisitive as she had. A small nod was all the director would get from him on that.
He nodded again slightly when she agreed about cold weather. It wasn't that he hated cold weather, it just wasn't his favorite type of weather. He was more of an autumn kind of guy. The air just felt more crisp and clean. His mind already went to what he was going to pack, though he didn't really have a lot of clothes to begin with. It didn't matter, weapons was more his style. He had lots of them, and he'd pack a good variety of them as well. When asked where he thought they should meet, he took a few moments to think before responding. "Well, I can honestly say that the one place I've ever really met someone and carried on a get to know you conversation was at a bar. I'd say the problem with that is we're going to be on a mission. But as long as we don't imbibe too much we'll be good and sober before we get there." He shrugged, his words more thinking out loud than an actual suggestion. He glanced over at the director, who's face was a stony expressionless mask. Nick flashed a small smile.
"Or, we could meet in the mess hall. Not gonna lie, I'm a little bit hungry." In truth that was almost always the case. Maverick consumed quite a bit of food. Part of his powers was based off of his metabolism after all. "I hear Gladys made a mean batch of brownies today," he smirked. Hale's expression changed to an eye roll. "Your decision," he said to both of them before walking off. Nick laughed. "Well, which would you rather do? I'm good either way."

Nick’s suggestions for where they could potentially meet up were luckily not too different than what she could have come up with herself. Food and drinks. There were few easier ways to get to know someone than sitting across the table from them in one way or another. And getting to know him would make it much easier for Aurora to communicate with him telepathically if that power of hers ever became necessary. Of course she didn’t plan on invading his mind without his consent. In order for him to give that consent, though, he had to get to know her a bit and give her a certain amount of trust. Hale really knew what he was doing, giving them that order.
Aurora considered her options while the Director exited the room, leaving the two of them alone. “Food should probably come first. I haven’t eaten much today, and you don’t need to see me get that drunk on the first day…” Drinking on an empty stomach was usually not a good idea. Aurora didn’t tend to be much of a drinker anyway. It could make her powers...unpredictable. There were too many times that her walls had come down a little bit and she’d heard things from other people’s minds that she hadn’t intended. Usually that was not a good thing. “So mess hall in about two hours? We can always hit the bar later if we feel like we need more time to… how did Hale put it? Build up co-existence?” She wondered whether or not his personality was really like the rumors made it out to be. He seemed pretty amicable so far, so it was a little hard to believe. Yet there was usually a reason for someone to have a certain kind of reputation, so she didn’t doubt he had at least a certain amount of that loner mentality. Maybe blown out of proportion by the rumor mill, but it was probably there.
Mess hall seemed like a very good idea, the more she thought about it. After all, who could resist the lure of brownies? Not her, that was for sure. Chocolate was its own section on the food pyramid as far as she was concerned.

With all this going on, with all the orders and suggestions coming from Hale, Nick still couldn't keep his mind off of how pretty the woman in front of him was. Hopefully, she wasn't 'hearing' that in his mind. But even if she was it wouldn't matter. It would eventually come out one way or the other. Nick tended to have loose lips while in the field. Not with organization secrets or anything like that, but just with his own. He liked to talk while he fought, for both the reasons of communication and for throwing off the gameplan of those he was fighting. Hale was one of the few people in the entire world that he trusted implicitly. Hopefully Aurora would join him in those ranks. Time would tell. But for now it was time to work on that co-existence.
He nodded. "Yeah, that sounds good. Though I got to be honest, seeing you drunk might be kind of fun." He smirked, but then shook his head. "You probably don't want me to get too drunk either. I'll be overly flirty and probably a bit more lewd then I should be. So I've heard, anyway. I don't usually remember much." Not that anyone really did. Being drunk was fun while it lasted, but remembering what you'd done or said was a bitch. "Mess hall, two hours. I'll see you there. I'll be the handsome guy in the corner," he said with a laugh before they parted ways. It wasn't overconfidence, but he did like to joke like that sometimes.
The trip to his quarters was short, as he'd been sure to make his room very close to the briefing areas. Nick was fond of being the first to know. When he got there, he quickly turned on a vid for background noise as he started packing up things he was going to need. Beef jerky, check. Guns, check. Ammunition, check. More beef jerky, check. More ammunition, check. Warm clothes, check. Looking at the time, he'd spent about a half hour packing. Shit. He sat down and watched some old vids for a while and then made his way to the mess hall. So he'd be a little early. It was only about a half hour. He waited patiently for Aurora to show up.

Aurora liked to drink, but she didn’t get drunk very often. Sometimes it made it much more difficult for her to keep other people’s thoughts out of her head. It could get really confusing up there, and had often led to some awkward situations. That was the main reason why when she drank, she usually drank alone. These days she found herself doing most things alone. It was just easier that way. Maybe Hale had seen that, and that was why he was sending her off on a mission with a partner. Not just any partner either, but one who apparently also didn’t play well with others. So far they seemed to have quite a bit in common.
She smirked when he mentioned how fun it might be to see her drunk, an expression which did not fade in the slightest after he admitted his own social tendencies while inebriated. “Well, drinking together and making fools out of ourselves is a pretty good way to build up our bond. That will make it easier to link up while on mission if we decide we don’t want to use coms.” The closer they got, the easier it would be for her power to link their minds. Potentially to the point that they could have clear conversations over a great distance, but she'd never reached that point with anyone yet. There were a couple of much faster ways to improve the link, but Aurora very much doubted that was what the director had in mind when he ordered them to build some coexistence. “We’ll probably end up at the bar either way. Lewd doesn’t scare me.” Little did he know that she also had that tendency, depending on what she drank. That meant things had the potential to get very interesting if they didn’t watch themselves. She figured that if nothing else, she would be the one to keep her head on straight considering what the consequences might be otherwise.
It didn’t take her long to pack her warm clothes, though she did occasionally get distracted by thoughts of what looked better on her, aesthetically speaking. Ugh. So what if Nick was hot? The odds were against him even wanting to speak to her again after this mission was over. Her power tended to scare people off, and she was used to that. Why was she even bothering to hope this guy might be different? Fuck it. Time to meet up. She was actually a little early, about fifteen minutes or so. She half expected him to not be there yet, but that was where she was wrong. “Handsome guy in the corner, I presume?” He certainly was that and more. “I hope you haven’t been waiting long.”

Luckily being sloshed drunk didn't affect Nick's powers too much. That was, unless he just wanted them too. He'd do little subtle things like cause someone's shoes to come unlaced or drop their cold drink in their lap, but never anything that caused any real harm. You could say that he was a bit of a prankster and not many people would disagree. Of course there was that one time that he'd caused Hale's belt to come undone and the boss' pants dropped to the floor. That got him in some serious trouble, but seeing the polka dot boxers the serious man was wearing had made that totally worth it. It wasn't well known, but Nick's powers were just as mental as Aurora's were, they just weren't as obviously mental. He first had to sense little "break points" in things and then he could manipulate the surroundings to his or someone else's advantage. It caused him many sleepless nights, and many nights alone as well, so he could also understand why Link would be a loner as well as he was. Hale seemed to have seen that too.
He shook his head in a laugh when she'd answered about drinking together. "No better was to build a friendship, I say," he answered. Of course there were other ways, more intimate ways, more fun ways as he'd call it, but they were going to work together so they had to stay professional. At least for now. Who knew what would happen once they got to the area and it was that cold at night. There was really only one good way of keeping warm with someone else in that sort of environment. Building a fire only helped so much. It was as if the cold really brought out the loneliness within you, and Nick believed that would be the case when it came to it. Oh the possibilities....
"It's like you know me," he said with a smile as she entered and asked her playful question. He stood up and pulled out her chair for her. Gentlemenliness wasn't really his thing, but it helped occasionally. "No, only a few minutes," he answered. "I got done packing pretty quickly, watched a few old vids and then came here. Dezi should be over here in a few minutes to grab our orders." He sat back down and leaned back in his chair a bit. She was really pretty, and that was distracting. Nick didn't usually get nervous around women, but somehow this time was different. Time to push past that. "So, getting to know each other...Where are you from originally?"

“Oh, thank you!” Aurora was surprised when Nick rose to pull her chair out for her. Who said chivalry was dead? She smiled to herself as she watched him make his way back to the other side of the table and resume sitting. At least partially because it gave her a chance to get another glance at that perfect ass of his. Like damn, that should be illegal. Okay, focus Aurora. Food came first. “Oh, okay good. I’m starved.” She took a look at the menu to figure out what she wanted to eat. Sometimes she had a hard time choosing. “Any recommendations? Other than the brownies of course, which I’m totally getting.” If he had a suggestion it might help her choose, but also you could learn something about people by the kind of food they liked. Food wasn’t as personal a choice as something like your favorite music or movie, but every little bit that helped the two of them get to know each other was a good thing.
Where was she from? Well, that was probably the most logical first question to ask. “New Orleans,” she replied with a small but slightly sad smile on her face. It had been a long time since she’d been back there. Eagle’s Nest kept her busy. Besides, it wasn’t home for her anymore. She didn’t really have one now. “I was on vacation up here when the Omega attacked, so I guess that’s how I got my powers. Freaked my family out pretty bad when I got back home, then I came back to find answers and Hale found me.” The Director and the team here at the Nest had been instrumental when it came to helping her control her powers, but it had taken time to get her to the point where she could go out into the field. That was why she was still a relatively new agent.
“So what about you? Where are you from? How’d you end up here?” She’d told him a decent chunk of her story, but of course there were always those details you left out when you didn’t want to scare someone off. Normally Aurora didn’t care as much, but she wanted to get along with Nick. Not just for the sake of the mission either, although that aspect was definitely there. She liked him so far. Their personalities seemed to mesh well. It made her curious about how much further that could go.

For the small amount of time that Nick had waited for Aurora to show up, his thoughts rested on his sister. How was he going to find her? He knew that he'd have all the help that Hale could muster, but finding her was the most important thing in the world to him, even more so than his job at Eagle's Nest. Still, he knew that the director would help in any way that he could. Maybe Aurora could help with that eventually as well. He stood to pull up her chair, a thing that a gentlemen would do. That was something Nick had never been called before, and would likely never be called, but it just seemed the thing to do at the time. "You're welcome," he said as he sat back down and picked up the menu. Yeah, brownies were a must here. "I was thinking about the duck l'orange," he joked. "Nah, I'll probably just get a BLT or two. Definitely some brownies too."
Okay, so she was from New Orleans. That was kinda cool. Nick would bet that she'd seen some wild parties in her time, considering that city was known for people just having a damn good time. He noted the slight sadness in her smile though. He was no psychic himself, but it seemed like she missed it. Then she spoke about the Omega's attack. "Never ceases to amaze me what's out there and how it can manipulate the world around it," he said with a small shrug. He wasn't trying to trivialize her plight, but he also thought he noted a bit of regret in her voice about having gained her powers. "It seems like a lot of people were gifted, or cursed as some would say, with abilities after that creepy alien came crashing down."
'Me? New York, born and bred," he answered. "Brooklyn, specifically. I was just your average high school jock. Dating the cheerleaders and throwing the football down the field. Really never was that good at the sports, but I enjoyed them. My sister was two years behind me. Now she was the athlete of the family. Basketball." Nick's powers had developed at around the same time as Aurora's had. "That attack left me with my powers too. So I guess we're connected in that way, huh?"

Aurora laughed. “Thank goodness. The kind of guy who eats duck l’orange is a little too fancy for me.” She’d known a few guys like that back home, and they didn’t get along well. At least it seemed so far like she and Nick wouldn’t have any problems working together. She hoped that would be the case, at least. She wanted to prove the Director right, that she was ready to get out into the field more often. There hadn’t been an incident involving her powers in quite a while now thanks to the training she’d gotten here. “Oooh maybe I’ll get a cheeseburger. With bacon. And avocado. Mmmm…” She was just making herself hungry at this point. Luckily Nick was right, and Dezi made her way over to grab their orders. Aurora of course ordered her burger, making sure to get some fries as well. Can’t have one without the other.
“Right? The universe works in mysterious ways.” At first, Aurora had thought of her powers as a curse. It had seemed like she would never be able to control them. Having to leave New Orleans had been a huge blow. It seemed like the end of the world for a 20-year old girl who knew nothing else, had never lived anywhere else. How would she rebuild her life when even her family rejected her? Despair had taken her back to Sapphire City, back to where her problems started. Lots had changed for her in the five years since then. She had to believe there was a reason for all the pain she’d experienced. For the powers she’d been given. Intuition told her that staying at the Eagle’s Nest and working for Hale would lead her to her purpose. Hopefully she was right.
The way he talked about his past made her smile. It seemed like he had a lot of good memories from back then. Even the attack didn’t seem to bring him down too much. It was interesting for her that they had that even in common too as the source of their powers. “Yeah, I guess we are.” Dezi brought their drinks over, and Aurora immediately took a sip of her vanilla milkshake. Mmm, delicious. “So you said your sister was the athlete of the family. Did she get injured or something?” she asked, curious as to why Nick had spoken of his sister’s basketball skill in the past tense. It would really be too bad if something had happened and she couldn’t play anymore. Injuries were pretty common in sports, though, unfortunately.

"Oh, no. I'm not that guy at all," Nick laughed. He didn't care for that fancy schmancy stuff himself. He was a simple guy and he indulged in the simple pleasures of life. So when Dezi came back to get their orders and Aurora ordered her burger and fries, Nick then ordered his two blt's and a basket of fries. Looking across the table now had NIck thinking about how someone so beautiful wasn't spoken for. But then he realized just how difficult her powers must make forming relationships. It couldn't be easy being able to read people's thoughts, especially those who you cared for. And it had to be a horrible feeling, believing that you're being intrusive when you really weren't doing it on purpose. Aurora seemed to have good control of her abilities though. But Nick had seen those with extranormal abilities lose that control before, and it was frightening to be sure.
"Yes, it does," he answered. The universe was an odd place. Earth itself was as well, and for some reason seemed to be the place everyone converged when their rage hit. It didn't make much sense to him, when there were plenty of other worlds out there. Why was earth the punching bag for the universe? "Well nothing serious," he answered about his sister's condition. "She had sprains and overworked herself a few times, but no. She....," he hesitated. The truth was that he didn't know where she was, or even if she was still alive. And that bothered him deeply. "She went missing. I don't know where, or why, but a short time after her graduation she just vanished."
About that time, Dezi brought back the food and Nick started with the fries. "Hale said that he'd help me find her when he could. I know he will, right now he's just super busy and doesn't have the resources to do that. Maybe once this business with the augury soldiers is over," he said softly. But he knew he was getting too deep now. "You ever talk to your family?" he asked, changing the subject. Surely she still had some contact with them. Of course he didn't know about their reaction to her powers. There had been nothing about that in her Eagle's Nest profile. Hale knew of course, but he didn't share everything.
