The game was fun, Rachelle decided. It took her dying once to get the hang of what the objective was, but after that it was just a good time. Run away from the little squiggly ghost things. She could do that. The problem was that she was distracted. DJ was right next to her, and she was still processing all that had happened this morning so far. She still couldn’t believe he liked her. A wallflower like her probably would never have gotten his attention if they hadn’t been thrown onto the same team by the Director. Maybe she was wrong, but it was hard to imagine the two of them ever having a conversation if that hadn’t happened. He and Walt were always the center of attention. It was hard to see others sometimes when you were standing in the spotlight.
“No, no, no no no… get away!” Rachelle loosed a small squeal as she tried in vain to get away from her ghostly pursuers. What could you do when you had two of them coming at you from opposite directions? Not much, that’s what. “DeeeeeeeJaaaaaaaay they ganged up on me!” she said with a pout. She only had one life left now. Better make it count. That was easier said than done, though, when there were four or five ghosty things and only two good guys. Being outnumbered like that was no fair, but she guessed that was just the point of the game. If it was 1:1 people could probably just keep playing forever and never die.
He commented about her being good at this game, and she laughed. “Not any better than you. We’re both on our last life.” It didn’t take too much longer before she got caught again and died, but it looked like DJ was still playing. She stepped back behind him a bit and wrapped her arms around his waist from behind but peered over his shoulder so she could still watch him playing. That wouldn’t be too much, would it? Rachelle wasn’t really sure. She just wanted to be close to him. After all that time of thinking of him as something unattainable, now he was actually her boyfriend. It still didn’t feel real.

Oh this was just ridiculous. Not that that was really a bad thing. DJ was having a good time, and it seemed that Rachelle was too. It was still so hard to believe that she'd taken his words so well. He realized that he'd just laid it all out on the line, and really he knew that was the only way to go. But it still scared the shit out of him. To know that she knew how he felt, and if she'd spurned him....he didn't think he'd ever have been able to recover from that. He was thankful that he wouldn't have to, and still completely stunned that she cared for him too. Occasionally he found himself looking over at her side of the screen. "Watch out for that guy," he pointed to one of the ghosts. Subconsciously he was already doing the good boyfriend thing and trying to let her win. He couldn't help but laugh at her squealing at the ghosts when they got too close.
"If only I could jump through the screen. I'd learn them a lesson," he said with a smile. "No one hurts my girl." The thought passed through his head that he could actually jump through the screen, just based on his power set, but that would be one hell of a mess, and he'd have a lot of answering to do to the director. No one wanted that. This game was kind of hard, but tons of fun. He kept playing, and eventually heard her sigh out when the ghosts took her last life. "I'll avenge you!" he said goofily, raising a fist in the air. That's when he felt her arms wrap around him, and a deep breath escaped from his lungs. Damn....she was perfect.
He played for a bit more until the ghosts took him down. "Well shit," he said with a laugh. He looked back at her, smiling, that beautiful face peering over his shoulder. He slowly turned around, lifting his arm over her head so that he could pull her into a close hug. "I'm so happy this turned out like it did. I've cared about you for so long, I....I don't even know how to even describe it." Sure, he'd done a bang up job describing it earlier, and his pitch was met with open arms. It was fascinating to him, she was as well. He leaned down his head and kissed her forehead. With a goofy smile he said, "Next game I bet you kick my ass."

No one hurts my girl… those words alone gave Rachelle a warm feeling throughout her entire body. That’s what she was now, DJ’s girl. How exactly she’d caught his eye she might never know, but she wasn’t going to question it anymore. Or doubt herself. And she was going to do whatever she could to make sure her boyfriend knew exactly how much she loved and valued him. If he’d never confessed, what would have happened with them? Probably nothing was the answer. She didn’t think she would have ever been able to get up the courage to do what he’d done this morning. Thank goodness he had, even if he’d thought she was going to reject him. Spending even these few moments with him so far on their first date was only making her fall for him more and more. This felt so right, and she really wanted to make it work if she could.
Neither of them had been able to stay alive for a particularly long time on this game, but it was fun. She waited patiently as he finished up his last life, but was even happier when he turned to her and pulled her in for a hug. “Me too,” she responded, laying her head gently on his chest. “Wanting something you don’t think you can have is an awful feeling.” She knew it all too well, because she’d been feeling much the same way about him before this morning. How many hours had she spent lying awake in her bed thinking about him? Overanalyzing damn near every word he said to her, every look that may or may not have been in her direction. He looked at her and smiled. Did that mean he liked her? No, there was no way. He was just a goofy, friendly guy who smiled at everyone. That was what she’d thought before. Being wrong never felt so good.
She laughed a little when he mentioned the next game. “Okay, but it’s your turn to pick this time.” It would be fun to get his input in terms of which games he wanted to play, rather than just her choosing everything and dragging him around from place. She didn’t want to be that kind of girlfriend who had to have everything her way. If she liked DJ, and obviously she did, why wouldn’t she trust in his opinion and decisions? Girls like that didn’t really make sense to her.

"It really is," DJ answered. For a long time now he'd had his eye on Rachelle. He'd loved her from afar, and that nagging feeling kept telling him to just leave it alone. Don't tell her anything. Let the feelings pass. They would eventually, right? But in this moment he was glad that he'd ignored that. His luck with women had never been that good, anyway. But he wasn't going to let that have any bearing on this. DJ was going to go out of his way, do everything that he could possibly do, say everything that was needed to say and make sure that she was always safe, to ensure that she knew just how much he loved her. "But now I don't have to feel like that anymore. And I couldn't be happier."
It was time to choose another game. There were just so many of them, though. Walking around the room, being sure to keep at least one arm wrapped around her, he stopped at one. "Hmmm," he thought out loud. This one was one of Walt's favorites. "Street Fighter Alpha. Walt plays this one a lot. I'm surprised that they don't hear him yelling and cursing across the facility." It was true, for as much as the guy played this game, he sucked at it. Got his ass handed to him every time, especially at the higher levels. DJ wasn't that good at it either, but he knew the controls, and he shook his head. He didn't want that advantage. His head turned to the skee ball machines. "There we go. It's like bowling, but with a tiny ball and no pins...." He shook his head. That was nothing like bowling. But it did look fun.
He set up both machines, one for each of them of course, and looked up at the rings at the top. "Okay so I'm guessing the high numbers are probably harder to hit," he thought out loud again. "This one okay with you?" he asked as he picked up the ball and shrugged. She had said it was his turn to pick, and this was his pick. He rolled the ball up the ramp, it bounced off the one hundred point ring and rolled down to the bottom. "What?!? That was in! This game doesn't like me!" he goofily complained. But it was all in fun. He waited for her to roll her first before he went again. That was bowling etiquette. So it must work here too, right?

Now they were on the hunt for a new game to play. Her eyes darted around as they went down the rows, reading as many of the game titles as she could. There were a couple DJ obviously recognized, and she briefly wondered why he’d chosen not to stop. Maybe those were games he didn’t like, or maybe they weren’t multi-player and he didn’t want her to feel left out if she was just watching him play. That would be super considerate of him. Either way, though, he did finally see one he wanted to choose and they stopped walking.
Skee Ball, huh? Sort of like bowling? Okay, Rachelle was up to try just about anything. Especially as long as she was hanging out with DJ. There was nothing she wouldn’t do to keep a smile on his face. He was obviously disappointed with his first roll, which was understandable. “Aww, don’t worry about it. I’m sure you’ll get it next time!” It wouldn’t take long for him to improve, she was sure. That didn’t mean she was going to let him win, though. Of course not. She was going to give it her best. And when she beat his score, she’d thoroughly rub it in his face. In a polite way, of course. She did have a little bit of a competitive streak.
She took a second to look at the board. Obviously the numbers were different amounts of points you could earn for rolling the ball into the different rings. She tried rolling her first one straight up the middle. It bounced off the 50 point ring and into the 20 a couple of rings below. At least she hadn’t sunk it into the very bottom like DJ’s had, but he’d been going for the higher 100 point rings. High risk, high reward, but not in his case. At least, not that time. “I didn’t do much better. Here, try it again.” She turned back toward him so she could watch his next roll. Then after a moment, she leaned over and kissed his cheek. “For luck…”
